Like that viscous mixture of methyl cellulose Malaysia, that colorful liquid which you accidentally spilled should be cleaned up immediately. Watch out for that clear solution, unless you want a layer of skin burned off your arms. Don’t sniff the fumes of that oil. Your insides will be in trouble if it gets into your nose.
You aren’t in a lab, but your house can be just as dangerous when you have products that utilize chemicals that can be harmful to yourself and other occupants of the house, especially children and pets. Warning labels are there for a reason. Read them.
Bleach
The ancient meme of drinking bleach may still be funny, but it isn’t in reality. The bleach that you keep in your house contains a mixture of water and sodium hypochlorite, the latter which is basically chlorine mixed with a sodium hydroxide solution. Ranging from 0.7 to 5.25 percent, sodium hypochlorite is pretty much what makes your bleach dangerous to your skin, eyes, nose and throat.
In your skin’s case, you may get dermatitis, an irritation that dries and inflames your skin. Swallowing bleach will earn you an irritated stomach, injured esophagus, nausea and vomiting.
Also, do not mix chlorine bleach with other house cleaning products. This is more important when it comes to ammonia because doing so will turn your house into a hazardous zone contaminated by different poisonous gases that cause breathing issues.
Antifreeze
If you are keeping some antifreeze for your car, make sure that it is stored away from children’s or pet’s reach. The colors and sweet taste of the liquid may be seductive to the two demographics, but swallowing it will only damage your organs, especially your heart, kidneys and brain.
Inhaling its fumes will only make you dizzy, but you still need to be cautious as you would to other poisonous fumes.
Laundry detergents
The detergents in your laundry area would have enzymes to loosen stains and dirt from your clothes. The three types of laundry detergents are cationic, anionic and non-ionic.
Cationic detergents are the most dangerous as swallowing one induces nausea, vomiting, shock, convulsions and coma. Though non-ionic is less toxic, it can still irritate your skin and eyes or increase your sensitivity towards other chemicals.
Being exposed to large quantities of detergents can cause asthma. They are also among the common accidents that occur at home due to indigestion of the liquid.
Toilet bowl cleaners
Toilet bowl cleaners also have sodium hypochlorite or even bleach itself as an ingredient. Disinfectant cleaners can hurt your eyes and skin, as well as burning your throat.
And just like bleach, toilet bowl cleaners should never be mixed with other household or cleaning products since they will release poisonous gases upon mixture too, and can suffocate you.
When using toilet cleaners, be sure to wear latex dishwashing gloves to protect your hands and arms from cleaner splashes. Otherwise, immediately wash the solution off your spot no matter how tiny the droplets are, and quickly seek medical help to avoid suffering any potential further ailments.
