Bringing a dildo to your toybox can improve your sex life and deliver you the pleasure you’ve been looking for, whether you’re new to the world of sex toys or just want to shake up your bedroom routine. Dildos are penetrative sex toys that could be placed vaginally, anally, or orally, and they can be orgasm-inducing solo or partnered sex accessories for people of all genders. You may use them for masturbation, pegging, double penetration, and more, and they come in a variety of lengths, sizes, and girths (including the shape of dragon d*cks and veggies). It’s all about how your partner and yourself would like to play with them when it comes to penetrative play. While using a dildo for the very first time, it’s crucial to learn everything there is to know about it, like how to begin, what to look for when purchasing, and how to use dildos to obtain the most enjoyable experience possible.
As per two sex educators, here are the fundamentals to learn prior you start – the dil-dos and dil-don’ts, if you will.
How To Begin With A Dildo
According to Searah Deysach, a sex educator and owner of the feminist sex business Early to Bed, the first step is to think about sizing. “Think about what you’re already at ease with being inside of yourself and use that as a guide,” she says to Bustle. Her golden rule? If you’re new to penetration, search for toys that are only a finger or two wide.
“A good place to start is to look at the many varieties of dildos available and see what appeals to you,” she advises. If you have the opportunity, she recommends going to your nearest sex shop to try out different goods. “Dildos exist in all lengths, forms, materials, and widths,” says Organic Loven Taylor Sparks, a sex educator and founder of an online intimacy business. Dildos are commonly phallic in design, although they can also be curved, ridged, double-sided, vibrate, or even feature suction cups (which is excellent for shower sex, FYI).
You can also experiment to see which feelings you prefer. You might favour lengthy, deep strokes or short, sluggish strokes, for example. “Find a moment when you can concentrate on yourself and/or your partner and explore the ways that you can enjoy it,” she advises.
Using A Dildo in a Safe Manner
Lube is your best friend when it comes to penetration. Deysach encourages readers to use lubrication that is toy-safe, pH-balanced, and glycerin-free. “Be careful to use enough of appropriate lubrication (water-based is usually ideal) while using any insertable device,” she advises. “Silicone lube will not work with silicone toys,” Sparks adds. “With all the other materials, use any other lube [besides silicone].”
“At start, take it carefully,” Deysach advises. When using larger toys, patience is even more important. Also, avoid inserting the dildo “too deep or too quickly.” Before penetrating, make sure you’re ready (read: wet enough) to enter the toy.
Oh, and if the toy doesn’t have a flared base, don’t put it in anally. “In your butt,” explains Deysach, “only use toys made for butt play.” Why? It may become lost if it does not have a flanged base.
